The quiet charm of games with nothing to lose

The quiet charm of games with nothing to lose

April 23, 2026 · Lukas Vanhoof

I didn't used to get cozy games. No challenge, no fail state — where's the game? Then a rough week sent me to Tidy Town and Hollowreach, and I finally understood the appeal.

These games trade tension for texture. Tidy Town is pure fiddly satisfaction: nudge a road, drop a house, admire the result. Hollowreach is slower and sadder, a drowned city you explore just to know more. Neither punishes you, and both are better for it.

What surprised me is how absorbing 'calm' can be. Hollowreach had me taking actual notes to crack its environmental puzzles. The lack of pressure didn't mean a lack of depth — it just moved the challenge somewhere gentler.

If your gaming lately feels like a second job, try one of these. Sometimes the point isn't to win. It's just to spend a nice hour somewhere else.
